Celebrate Christmas in July by Helping the Vernon Township Food Pantry
The goal of this observance is to boost donations and lift the spirits of residents experiencing food insecurity throughout the summer.

The number of individuals and families utilizing the Vernon Township Food Pantry has reached an all-time high, and unfortunately, donations during the summer months are traditionally lower. This year is no different. Community members tend to be more generous during the winter holiday season, when the spirit of giving is at an all-time high. In addition to summer vacations, many yearly food drives do not take place during summer which contributes to the seasonal decline in donations. By celebrating Christmas in July, community members can rekindle the spirit of giving and help boost much-needed donations to ensure the shelves are stocked for those experiencing food insecurity.
The Township’s Food Pantry has been open for more than 25 years and serves roughly 175 families each month - a number that has doubled over the last three years. The Township has seen a 100% increase in Food Pantry users since the pandemic, which has had lasting impacts on many households, and resulted in job losses, reduced hours, and ongoing financial instability for many.
"Food insecurity continues to be a pressing issue in the communities served by the Township, leading to this seasonal, increased demand," said Vernon Township Supervisor Tim Kobler. "The Christmas in July campaign aims to boost donations; every contribution, regardless of its size, has a meaningful impact to ensure our neighbors in need are nourished and supported through challenging times."

Individuals who need to access the Food Pantry must provide proof of Township residency, such as a current utility bill. The Pantry is open to registered residents on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Additionally, residents can call the Township for emergency food assistance during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
For those who wish to donate, the Township website provides a seasonal wish list and an “essentials list,” detailing the most needed food items to stock the Food Pantry’s shelves. The Township also accepts credit card donations through PayPal, allowing donors to make a one-time contribution, or to become monthly or annual supporters. This enables the Township to purchase food at discounted rates through a partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Food Pantry wish list can be found here: https://vernontownship.com/157/Food-Pantry.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are a welcome addition during the warmer weather months. The Township plants a garden each year where all produce is donated directly to the Food Pantry. Residents who garden and have any extra fruits or vegetables are encouraged to donate them to provide in-need residents with healthier food options.
Donations can also be dropped off at the Township Administrative Building, 3050 N. Main Street in Buffalo Grove, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information or for any questions, please call Nancy Urice at the Township at 847-634-4600.
