Fall at Mariano's Blamed on Broken Chair

A Highland Park woman sues the grocer for "pain and anguish" suffered after fall two years ago.

VERNON HILLS, IL - A customer at the Mariano’s Fresh Market in Vernon Hills two years ago says the grocer is responsible for her falling out of a chair.

Giovannina Carani, of Highland Park, filed a lawsuit against Mariano’s and Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc., its parent at the time, in Cook County Circuit Court on Dec. 18, according to The Cook County Record. Carani seeks damages of more than $50,000 for pain and anguish, current and future medical bills and legal costs.

Carani had sat in a chair that had been provided for customer use on Dec. 22, 2013. The suit claims Mariano’s was negligent in failing to inspect the chair, which allegedly had a broken leg and was unfit for public use.
