Hawthorn Middle School North eighth graders in Vernon Hills recently experienced what the poor might feel like while living on the streets. During Kathryn Balmes’ and Kyle McKenzie’s social studies classes students re-enacted life during the 1930s Great Depression by experiencing soup kitchens, begging on the street and sleeping in cardboard boxes.
