A fight that broke out between two students at Hannah Beardsley Middle School in Crystal Lake Monday has lead to felony juvenile charges against one child who police said fractured the other child's clavicles and made a "verbal reference to the victimβs national origin."Β
The child has beenΒ charged with aggravated battery and hate crimeβboth felony offenses. Β The child was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Facility pending a court hearing at a later date.Β
Police were called to Hannah Beardsley Middle School, 515 E. Crystal Lake Ave. in Crystal Lake, at 12:20 p.m. on Monday regarding the fight. Police learned the fight was isolated to the two students.ΒPolice said one student tackled the other student and repeatedly struck the other child with their hands "seemingly without provocation," according to the news release. No weapons were involved.
Police learned on TuesdayΒ the suspect in the case made the verbal reference regarding the victim's national origin just before the fight andΒ confirmed the victim sufferedΒ fractured clavicles from the fight.Β At that time, anΒ original charge of battery was then upgraded to felony charges of aggravated battery and hate crime, according to the news release.Β
The names of both the victim student and accused offender are not being released because they are both minors.Β
