Vernon Hills High School Commencement Tonight

The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. May 31.

As she prepares to give a speech in front of her fellow seniors at graduation tonight, Olivia Candocia is more excited than nervous.

It's something she has wanted to do since the summer before her senior year.

"I have to memorize it, but luckily I'm in theater, so I'm used to it," said Candocia.

She is one of two students — the other being Kate Lee — who will give speeches at the Vernon Hills High School commencement ceremony, set for 7 p.m. at the campus.

Candocia started planning a graduation speech last summer well in advance of the audition process. She auditioned in front of judges — including a couple of fellow seniors.

"I was so excited," she said of being selected as a graduation speaker.

Candocia said the inspiration for her speech came from the Dove chocolate wrappers, which contain tidbits of advice.

"I started becoming intrigued by the simplicity of them," she said of the wrappers, which she now collects.

Her speech will focus on finding your passion, believing in yourself and taking the initiative, Candocia said. At the end of her speech, she plans to invite all of the seniors to join hands and "feel the connection. It's our moment."

"It's just quirky enough to work," said Candocia.

She looks forward to being able to engage the audience, which is something she generally couldn't do while being involved in theater productions. Candocia was involved in theater during all four years of high school and participated in 12 shows, including "Seussical the Musical."

Candocia plans to pursue acting and communications at Illinois State University this fall. Though she's excited about college, Candocia said she will miss Vernon Hills High School.

"Everybody's acknowledged there. It's such a great community," she said. Principal Ellen Cwick is always seen walking around school, talking to students, Candocia said.

"She's very involved," Candocia added.
