Vernon Hills Lions Club Hosts Blood Drive Amid Membership Decline

Vernon Hills, IL – From supporting local vision and hearing programs to funding scholarships and community projects, the Vernon Hills Lions Club has been a pillar of service for decades. But one of its most impactful efforts—hosting blood drives with Vitalant—is now at risk as membership declines.
With over 125 drives and 5,000 units of blood collected, the club’s work has helped save up to 15,000 lives. Recently, longtime member Gary Zabilka received a Certificate of Appreciation from Vitalant for his dedication. “I just got a card saying my donation was used for a patient,” he shared. “It’s humbling to know we’re making such an impact.”
Despite this success, the club faces an uncertain future. “We’re struggling to recruit new members,” Zabilka said. “Most of us are over 60, and many feel it’s time for others to step up. Without fresh energy, we may have to close.”
Lions Clubs worldwide focus on vision and hearing health, but in Vernon Hills, blood drives have become a key mission. A decade ago, the club had 35 members; today, only 18 remain, with 10-12 actively involved. “This work makes a difference,” Zabilka emphasized. “It’s about saving lives and giving back.”
The Vernon Hills Lions Club needs new volunteers to continue its service. “We need people who care,” Zabilka urged.
