Bites Nearby: Komb's Beef and Dogs' Mexican Menu Will Satisfy Cravings

Dining with a group? Can’t decide on what to eat? Then stop by Komb’s Beef and Dogs at 5452 S. La Grange Road in Countryside for a variety of your fast food faves with a south-of-the persuasion.

Since the recent remodeling of the strip mall which houses Komb’s Beef and Dogs, you’ll find up-to-date and open surroundings for a typical fast food joint. Photos and posters paying homage to Chicago icons cover the walls. Al Capone, The Blues Brothers and a Michael Jordan are all present.

Pulling up in the lot, your gaze immediately takes you to a rotisserie of reddish meat resembling gyros in the window. At first glance, I got a little nervous looking at the unfamiliar hunk of meat. Once inside, you notice two vertical broilers, one with gyros and the other with a seasoned Mexican meat used for tacos.

The menu is filled with many options, including several Mexican favorites like tamales, quesadillas and burritos.

The Philly Cheesesteak sandwich was loaded with meat and grilled onions, green peppers and topped with tons of cheese, not cheddar, possibly a Chihuahua or mozzarella. Diving in at first bite, it’s a greasy mess… as most fast food sandwiches should be. Never having tried the original in Philadelphia, I thought it was pretty tasty.

Komb’s cheeseburger with everything included a pile of grilled onions. This truly added to the overall flavor of the burger. Definitely a winner! Fries are the crinkle cut variety and not very noteworthy.

Adjacent to the soda fountain dispenser you’ll find another Mexican favorite, Horchata de Arroz. This refreshing drink made using rice milk, tastes like a rice pudding. It's made of ground long-grain rice, water, evaporated milk, cinnamon and sugar.

For kids, or kids at heart, Komb’s also serves milkshakes and floats. If you want to take the fast out of fast food, kick back for dinner and enjoy a pitcher of beer.
