A Summer of Possibilities

Great ways to worship, learn, serve the community and have fun in Western Springs this summer

Ahh, summer.  It’s here.  You can feel it in the excitement of the little kids counting down the days left of school.   The first visit to the swimming pool.  The French Market is back.  The Pet Parade is this weekend.   And the warm summer months stretch ahead full of possibility.  We love this time of year.  The possibility of summer stretched out in front of us like a blank canvas, waiting to be filled with fun activities, restoring vacations, opportunities to learn in ways that tight school-year schedules don’t always allow.

At the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs (PCWS), we’re looking forward to a summer of possibility.  We are a vibrant group and we welcome you to join us for Sunday worship or any of our upcoming activities and educational opportunities.  As the weeks go on, we’ll be blogging and sharing photos of our events.  Here’s a look at what we’re excited about in the next few weeks.

Children and Youth Activities

A Prayer Cloud is launching June 3!  This is a new program to help adults and children in the congregation connect through prayer.  We’ll be sending prayers and balloons skyward, plus enjoying lots of cotton candy clouds.

Music and Drama Camp is happening June 18-24.  MAD Campers will spend the week preparing the musical The Lost Boy.  This musical takes place during Jesus’ childhood and is the story of Jesus getting lost from his parents.  Children will rehearse the musical, prepare the sets and costumes and have a week of fun and learning.  MAD Camp is open to all children who have completed grades 1-8.  Contact us at 708-246-5220 for more information or to join the cast!

Vacation Bible School runs July 23-27.  This year’s theme is Operation Overboard:  Dare to Go Deep with God.  VBS runs from 9am to noon with lots of different activities during the morning…crafts, recreation and sports, music, story time and lots of fun!  Check our web site or call the church office at 708-246-5220 to register!

And don’t even get us started on the Youth Activities planned for the summer…Kids in grades 6-12 have amazing activities planned!  Secret Safaris, Scavenger Hunts, a Waterfight Night and a Trip to the Dunes.  It’s enough to make some of the adults jealous.

Mission Opportunities

PCWS has a strong commitment to mission and we’ll be spending the second Sunday of each summer month doing a variety of mission projects, at church and in the community.  We’re calling it Jesus Has Left the Building…and We’re Going With Him!   We’re also holding a Work Day at Maria Shelter on Saturday, June 16.  Maria Shelter is a non-denominational transitional homeless shelter.  We’ll be working to help Maria Shelter look brighter and be even cleaner and safer for the women and children calling Maria Shelter their home.  All volunteers are welcome to join us.

Worship

Most importantly, we’re looking forward to a summer of worship and fellowship.  Taking time each Sunday to reflect and renew.  We worship every Sunday at 9:30am and visitors are always welcome.   Please note that on June 10, July 8 and August 12 we will depart from our usual worship service and do the Jesus Has Left the Building…and We’re Going With Him! program.  Those Sundays will include a brief worship service and then everyone will be sent out to do mission work at PCWS or in the community.

As the weeks go on, we’ll share more information about these and many other activities in the life of PCWS.  We’ll also be sharing some fun stories, great recipes (our church has some AMAZING cooks and bakers), book reviews, music recommendations, and lots more.   Please check our web site (www.presbyws.org) or call the church office at 708-246-5220  to learn more and always feel welcome to join us!
