Just as "The Boxcar Children" learn that home is more than just a house, students at the Children's Theatre of Western Springs learn that a home away from home is anyplace they can be themselves.

The other day, one of my students said to me, "The theatre is my real home. The house with my family is my home away from home." It was nice to hear that he feels so comfortable among our little community of students and teachers, and he's not the first student to share that sentiment.

As kids get older, I think they learn that they actually have many homes. Sometimes their second home is a classroom. Sometimes it's an athletic field. Sometimes it's a friend's house. And, yes, sometimes it's a theatre.

When students find a home away from home (and let's face it--no place can really substitute for a kid's family), it's an important part of growing up. Having a second home is a step toward independence, and having trustworthy adults around who can work with kids and their parents makes that place even more special.

Currently, our High School Rep students are working on a production of The Boxcar Children: a story about resourceful kids who make a second home in an abandoned boxcar. Sadly, they don't have caring adults nearby for much of the time, but they do have each other. Together, they make the boxcar a place that is as full of hope and happiness as any house could be and prove that love is what really makes someplace a home.

Our students have a lot of affection for each other, and our faculty is dedicated to fostering an environment that allows kids to connect and create a real sense of community. Just as The Boxcar Children learn that home is anyplace you find love and laughter, our students are learning that their theatre home is a place where they can laugh, love, and learn to be themselves.
