"It's A Boy!"

The Reverend Jennifer Burns Lewis offers an invitation to prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christmas.

I can’t think of any more dramatic words that an individual or a couple can announce than when a baby is expected.  Whether a surprise or the result of years of prayer, no matter what the ages of the parents, nor how prepared or unprepared the speaker or the hearer of the news may be, the exclamation “I’m having a baby” or “We’re expecting” are powerful, life-changing words.

The season of Advent is upon us.  The time of preparation and waiting is here.  The Church, throughout the world, is decking the halls, lighting candles, engaging in mission, and preparing our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s coming once again.  We know how the story will turn out.  We know “It’s a boy” and we know that shepherds and wise men will attend the birth of the savior of the world.  But just because we “know” all this, I wonder and I hope that this year, we will approach the season with the same kind of hope and excitement that belongs to all who know how life-changing a baby can be.

Please plan a little bit this season.  Come and be a part of worship.  Gather with us for an activity or two or three.  Plan to attend a program or two.  Engage in mission activities in the coming weeks.  Whatever you do, please ready your hearts along with us as we “prepare Him room” so that our voices will be part of the chorus when “heaven and nature sing” of the birth of the Christ child in our hearts once more.
