The week kicks off with a Recycled Art Contest, which encourages all students and staff to make art that promotes the 3 R’s- reduce, reuse and recycle. All submissions must be at least 75 percent reused material. Submissions will be on display during lunch periods, and students can vote for their favorite piece.

Krispy Kreme donuts will be available for sale Wednesday, April 17, during lunch periods with all proceeds being donated to the Alliance for the Great Lakes Charity. Donuts will be two for $1.

In addition, the Recycling Club has scheduled a Trading Post on Thursday, April 18, during lunch hours. The Trading Post is an event meant to promote “reuse.” Students are asked to bring something from home of nominal value that is in good working condition but that they no longer want. They turn it in to Club sponsor Tom Swiontek, who gives them an Earth Buck in exchange for each item. At lunch on Thursday, April 18, students can spend their Earth Bucks to “buy” one of the donated items. Students are encouraged to bring items such as books, CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, etc.

On Friday, all of LTHS is encouraged to wear green in honor of Earth Week.

Finally, Recycling Club members and any other interested students or staff are invited to join the Earth Day celebration at McCormick Woods from 9am-noon at the northeast corner of 1st and 31st avenues in Riverside on Saturday, April 20, to help pull brush and invasive weeds, such as garlic mustard.
