National Night out is a nationwide annual campaign that has been held since 1984 and is sponsored by the national Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. The purpose of the event is to increase awareness about various police programs offered by communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts.

Residents are asked to show their support for crime prevention by turning on their porch lights from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. the evening of the event.
