LT offers Career Exploration to underclassmen

The program is designed to bring career speakers to inform students about the educational path, skills, and lifestyle certain careers entail

Lyons Township High School students at South Campus are invited to attend a lunchtime law enforcement Career Exploration Program Tuesday, October 25, in Room D103 during periods 4-5 (10:27am-12:23pm). The program is designed to bring career speakers to South Campus to inform students about the educational path, skills, and lifestyle certain careers entail.

This first session will focus on military, law enforcement and criminal justice fields. Students are welcome to bring their lunch and stay for an entire period or just drop in during their 25-minute study hall; students will benefit most from attending the entire period. Interested students can sign up in the Counseling Office.
Guest speakers include:

    • Chief Pamela Church- Western Springs Police Chief
    • Officer AJ Hull- Western Springs Police Officer
    • Chief Robert Guerrieri- DuPage State’s Attorney Criminal Investigations Unit (LT alumnus!)
    • LT Assistant Principal Toriano Griggs- Military Veteran
    • LT Buildings & Grounds Foreman Bradley Drake- Military Police Veteran

The program, a brainstorm of senior Emma Sorrentino, of Burr Ridge, is in its second year. “I was inspired to create the Career Exploration Program after struggling with pinpointing my own interests and goals. As an underclassman, I was frequently asked to identify my aspirations. The only problem was that I could not choose a particular interest to pursue simply because I had so many,” Sorrentino said. “I realized that I was not alone in my struggle and that my peers would benefit from having the opportunity to meet with a broad range of career speakers and learn first-hand what a day in their lives would be like,” she added.
Sorrentino took her original idea for a career-based interest program to College Coordinator Lianne Musser, who then referred her to South Campus Associate Principal Therese Nelson. “Mrs. Nelson and I connected instantly; she understood my vision and together we were able to make it a reality! I feel very lucky to have her mentor me and to work alongside her for the past two years. I have learned a lot from her through the Career Exploration Program,” Sorrentino said.
A wide variety of speaking opportunities are available. Anyone with an interest in speaking to students, please contact Associate Principal Therese Nelson at tnelson@lths.net for more information.
