In Review: LTHS Fall Sports

As winter athletics begin tryouts, here's a look at how fall sports are concluding at LT.

Boys soccer- The varsity team dropped out of the IHSA postseason in the super-sectional round, ending its 2010 campaign with a 22-2-2 record. The 3-2 double OT defeat to Naperville North means the program falls one match short of a second consecutive appearance in the IHSA final four. But with nearly half of its players set to return in 2011, including top prospect Elliot Borge, soccer's potential remains high for the future.

Girls volleyball- The lady Lions are alive and kicking, advancing to the super-sectional round of the playoffs with a home victory last night over St. Ignatius. Lyons (38-1), which was ranked No. 3 in state by the Chicago Tribune PrepsPlus section going into the postseason, face a tough test against Marist Saturday afternoon: the Redhawks remain the only opponent to beat the Lions in 2010. A win in the super-sectional—the program's third in three years--would send the girls towards their second consecutive state semifinal. Senior Jocelyn Birks is a monster on the kill hits.

Boys football- In head coach Kurt Weinberg's second year at the helm, the upstart La Grange side has been playing good football all season, suffering only a single defeat to York, 26-16, on October 2. After destroying Chicago Vocational 58-0 in a postseason qualifying game, the Lions welcome Sandburg to Bennet Field tonight at 7:30 p.m. A triumph would see the hosts into the class 8A quarterfinals against the winner of Mount Carmel vs. Neuqua Valley. Junior tailback Jaime Jones has shined in big games; expect him to make an impact this evening.

Cross country- Both the boys and girls varsity cross country teams qualified for the state competition in Peoria on Saturday. The youthful girls group aspires to crack the top ten as a team, while the boys squad hopes to perform the way it did in the sectionals, where the team took second overall. Look for senior standouts Sam Telfer and Carly Rocco to challenge for top five places individually in their respective races.

Golf- Contrary to preseason expectations, the varsity boys golf squad failed to advance past the regional round. A predominantly young roster did tout promising sophomore Charlie Netzel, who finished in 19th place individually at the state meet. The girls team fared much better collectively, qualifying for the state meet after displaying consistent play in the regional and sectional rounds. The team finished 10th overall, while junior star Katie Ellis finished 17th individually.

Girls swimming- In a highly competitive West Suburban Silver Division, the Lions ended up second in the conference meet, with powerhouse Hinsdale Central claiming top prize. Sectionals will be held this weekend at Downers Grove South where LT will look to progress to the IHSA state meet in Evanston. Iowa committed senior Gigi Groya is superhuman in the water, setting numerous LTHS records in her four years.
