LTHS to host College Week

The College Fair on April 6 at the North Campus Fieldhouse highlights the week's activities

Lyons Township High School kicks off College Week on Monday, April 4, to raise awareness about the many college opportunities that await LT students. It also promotes conversation and interest in the college process for juniors and some great memories and stories from faculty and staff as they reminisce about their experiences.

The College Center is hosting a “Guess Who?” and “Guess Where?” Contest. Photos of faculty and staff from their college years are posted in the College Center hallway. Students can guess who the faculty member is and where he/she attended college. Entry forms are in the College Center. Winner(s) will be decided on the last day of College Week and prizes will be awarded.

Monday will feature a workshop for juniors that focuses on writing college essays. C2Education, a college and testing preparation company, will guide students through the requirements of the college essay. Juniors MUST sign up on Naviance under “College Visits” to attend.

Tuesday is Sticker Day and gives staff an opportunity to proudly sport the name of their alma mater. The College/Career Center will supply every employee with a sticker so that employees can tout the name of the college(s) where they received their undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree(s). Students are encouraged to ask staff about their experiences. Seniors will also have a chance to wear stickers so show pride in the decisions they made for their future and to talk to juniors about the process.

Tuesday is also College Questions Day. College Coordinator Lianne Musser will have a table in the cafeteria during lunches and students can get answers to any college questions they may have.

Mid-week marks College Night at the North Campus Fieldhouse from 6-8pm, which offers students an opportunity to meet representatives from more than 200 schools that will answer questions about admission requirements, strength of a program or major, housing, financial costs and aid, as well as fraternities, sororities, and athletics. Each college/university will be assigned a table alphabetically in the fieldhouse, except for Illinois state universities, which will be located in the rear of the fieldhouse. Counselors will be available throughout the evening to help direct students to colleges that offer specific majors.

The parking lot at North Campus will be reserved for college representatives only. Parking will be available on the local streets and at South Campus with a shuttle running between South and North Campus continuously from 5:45 – 8:15 pm.

Thursday is College/Scholarship Pride Day. Students who bring copies of their college acceptance and/or scholarship offers to the College Center will receive a sweet treat!

Thursday is also STEM Day. Junior students can hear from a panel of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) schools with different approaches and strengths, including Iowa State University, Michigan Technological University and Missouri University of Science and Technology. Students must sign up on Naviance under “College Visits” to attend.

Show your college spirit on Friday, April 8. LT staff and students are encouraged to wear their favorite college gear to show their support for their favorite university or college team.

A workshop for juniors that focuses on “Next Steps” will also be hosted on Friday. Juniors can learn where they should be in the process and what they should do over the summer to be prepared for college. Sign up on Naviance under “College Visits” to attend.
