
A round of applause is in order for the art, poetry and prose staffs of the Lyons Township High School literary magazine, Menagerie. The 2013 publication was recently named a Gold Medalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, ranking it in the top 10% of all literary magazines in the United States. The magazine received 956 points out of a possible 1000. In addition, Menagerie received All-Columbian Honors for special merit in Organization, Content and Design. To attain this honor, the magazine achieved the 95th percentile in each of the categories.
The judge called the poetry featured in Menagerie exceptional, saying, “It contains sharp imagery and conveys believable ideas and emotions.” The judge had this to say about the artwork: “Menagerie’s overall visual impact is striking and uncluttered. The art chosen for publication reflects excellent editorial judgment.” On the magazine as a whole, the judge said, “Menagerie: A Work in Progress is a well-organized and professional-looking magazine. It’s obvious that the staff and editors took great care to present the content in a clear, unique and appealing manner.”
