Quick Tips for Personal Safety: Home Safety
- Invest in a locked mailbox and drop outgoing mail at the post office or U.S.P.S. mailboxes
- Trim shrubbery so bad guys can’t hide out
- Always lock your external doors, windows, and door between garage and house, whether you’re home or going out
- Leave your spare key with a trusted neighbor. Never leave it hidden on your property
- Use deadbolts that are at least grade 2, extend at least 1 inch, and have strike plates reinforced to the frame
- Install motion-sensing lights outside of entrances
- For added security, consider installing an alarm system
- When you’re out of town:
- Set inside and outside lights on timers set for random times
- Never leave notes on your door for service people or visitors
- Cancel deliveries or have someone you trust pick them up
Closed Home Registration: In addition to the Residential Safety Tips above, the LaGrange Park Police Department offers a ‘Closed Home’ registration system for residents who will be out of town. A ‘Closed Home’ card is completed at the Police Station, detailing when the resident will be away, who has keys, what lights may be left on, etc., and owner contact information. Officers make special checks of Closed Homes at randomly scheduled times to ensure the homes are secure. Upon return to town, the resident must sign off on the ‘Closed Home’ card. If you are planning to be away on vacation or business, please take advantage of this service.
