Support Veterans via Beanie Babies and Food Drive at PROJECT DAY with American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1941!

Join us on Saturday, March 28 for our inaugural PROJECT DAY to support veterans via Beanie Babies and non-perishable food collections.

On Saturday, March 28, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1941 will host its inaugural PROJECT DAY to support veterans and military families through collections and special projects.

The public is invited to join us between 10:00am and 1:30pm at our Post Home to complete projects in support of veterans, active duty troops and military families. The day is organized in open house style: arrive when you can, leave when you need to or simply stop by to drop off Beanie Babies or non-perishable food donations.

Our projects will include:

  • Collecting Beanie Babies to be redistributed to inpatients at Hines VA Hospital and through care packages sent to active duty troops by Operation Gratitude. Dolls may be new or gently loved -- original tags are not required.

  • Collecting non-perishable food for Greater Chicago Food Depository which manages food pantries for veterans at Hines VA near Maywood and Jesse Brown VA in Chicago. Did you know 1 in 18 families served by the GCFD include a veteran? Most needed items include PROTEINS: canned beans, tuna, peanut butter, canned vegetables and fruits; SHELF-STABLE: jelly, stew, chili, soup, pasta sauce.

Financial donations can be made directly to our food drive online:

  • Creating hand-made get well cards for hospitalized veterans at Hines VA Hospital and other local facilities.
  • Writing thank you notes for active duty troops to be distributed in care packages from Operation Gratitude.

  • Assembling paracord survival bracelets for active duty troops to be distributed via Operation Gratitude care packages.

  • Collecting and organizing household coupons for military families to use at their local commissaries on military bases around the globe!

  • Providing materials for youth to create Poppy Posters for our annual Poppy Poster Contest. Full details on this program are available here: http://auxiliary.al1941.org/poppy-poster-2015.html
