Western Springs May Expand Sidewalk Network
The village is about to get a grant to install a sidewalk in a neighborhood where residents have been seeking such a project.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – For years, residents in Western Springs' Forest Hills neighborhood have asked for more sidewalks.
The 30-block area is a patchwork of houses with sidewalks and those without.
In 2006, the village started requiring sidewalks for new construction. So as older houses are replaced, sidewalks are installed. In many cases, sidewalks lead to grass on both sides.

The village is poised to receive a $190,000 grant to fill in gaps in the sidewalk on the east side of Grand Avenue between 51st and 55th streets. The money is coming through the county from the federal government.
During construction, the village said it would make every effort to protect trees in the parkway. In the past, the removal of trees has proved controversial.

With engineering, the project is expected to cost a total of $276,500, with the village paying the remainder.
The village staff is recommending the Village Board approve the project, which is slated for this year. The board plans to discuss the issue at its meeting Monday.
In 2021, the village surveyed Forest Hills residents about the possibility of sidewalks. Many younger families said they wanted sidewalks for the safety of children.
Opponents offered a variety of arguments against sidewalks, saying the neighborhood has done fine without them, they don't want to pay for the project and the lack of sidewalks gives a less city-like feel. Of those opposed, two-thirds cited the cost.
Because of the grant, residents won't pay for the Grand Avenue sidewalk.
