Western Springs Police Remind Residents Of Railway Safety

With spring around the corner, there is always an increase in pedestrian and bike traffic, the department said.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs Police Department is reminding residents of pedestrian and railroad safety. With spring around the corner, there is always an increase in pedestrian and bike traffic, the department said.

If you are outside, make sure to pay attention to your surroundings. Earbuds and headphones can stop you from hearing ambient noise. That noise is often what keeps you safe, so make sure to remove earbuds and to keep your eyes on your surroundings, the department said.

The department said to look before you cross railroad tracks and remember that multiple trains can be approaching from either direction. Gates usually function property, but they are not foolproof.

Police said to never stand past the railroad gate arm and remember that a train traveling at 55 miles per hour can take over a mile to stop.
