Western Springs Sees Biggest Jump In Virus Cases

Village's coronavirus situation remains much better than its neighbors.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Over the last week, Western Springs saw its biggest increase in coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic. As of Sunday, the village had 13 new cases over the previous week, reaching 63, according to Cook County Public Health Department numbers.

Even with that increase, Western Springs' situation is far better than nearby suburbs. The village has seen one death as the result of the coronavirus, county figures show. That's far below the 13 deaths in neighboring La Grange since the pandemic started.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 4.7 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 6.5 in Clarendon Hills, 6.6 in Darien, 6.8 in La Grange Park, 7.4 in Elmhurst, 10 in Burr Ridge and DuPage County as a whole, 11.4 in Hinsdale, 13.5 in La Grange and 14.8 in suburban Cook County.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 147,251, up 4 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,020 state residents.

Nationally, 2.8 million people have caught the virus and 129,576 have died from it.
