Western Springs Sees First Virus Death

Village's situation is still far better than nearby suburbs. La Grange has seen 13 deaths.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs continues to see little growth in its coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, the village saw three new cases over the previous week, bringing the total to 47.

In the last week, Western Springs saw its first death as the result of the coronavirus, according to the county medical examiner's office. That's far below the 13 deaths in La Grange since the pandemic started.

The village's situation is better than nearby suburbs. As of Sunday, Western Springs had 3.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 5.6 in Clarendon Hills, 5.8 in Elmhurst, 6 in Darien, 6.2 in La Grange Park, 8.6 in Burr Ridge, 9.4 in DuPage County, 10.4 in Hinsdale, 11.5 in suburban Cook County and 12.5 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 136,762, up 3 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 6,647 state residents.
