Western Springs Virus Caseload Up By A Fifth

Village had the lowest rate among neighbors surveyed. Now, Darien has the lowest.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Over the last week, Western Springs' coronavirus caseload increased by 23 percent, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The increase was 19 cases, for a total of 102 as of Sunday.

In the last week, one Western Springs resident died because of the coronavirus, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That brings the total to two.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 7.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people. For months, the village held the lowest rate among its neighbors surveyed by Patch. But Darien took that position in the last week, with 7.2 cases per thousand. The others are 7.9 in La Grange Park, 8.5 in Clarendon Hills, 9.6 in Elmhurst, 11 in DuPage County, 11.7 in Burr Ridge, 13.3 in Hinsdale, 15.8 in suburban Cook County and 16.5 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 161,575, up 5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,295 state residents.

Nationally, 3.8 million people have caught the virus and 139,659 have died from the disease.
