Western Springs Virus Cases Up By 14%

Village's coronavirus rate is still better than many towns, but Darien remains in the top position in the area.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Over the last week, Western Springs' coronavirus caseload increased by 14 percent, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The hike amounted to 14 cases, for a total of 116 as of Sunday. The number of deaths remained at two.

The rate of increase last week was lower than the previous one, when it was 23 percent. But it is still a faster pacer than the five weeks preceding June 27, when only 14 new cases were reported.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 8.7 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The village had the lowest rate in the area, but Darien took that position two weeks ago. Western Springs' figure compares to 7.9 in Darien, 8.9 in La Grange Park, 10.4 in Clarendon Hills, 10.6 in Elmhurst, 11.8 in DuPage County, 13.4 in Hinsdale, 13.7 in Burr Ridge, 16.5 in suburban Cook County and 17.8 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 171,424, up 6 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,398 state residents.

Nationally, 4.2 million people have caught the virus and 145,982 have died from it.
