Western Springs Virus Rate Increase Slows

Village's rate is still better than most communities in the area, but Darien now has the lowest rate among towns surveyed.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Over the last week, Western Springs' coronavirus caseload increased by 9 percent, lower than the previous week's 14 percent, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The hike totaled 11 new cases, for a total of 127 as of Sunday. The number of deaths remained at two.

In recent weeks, Western Springs has seen bigger increases than it has throughout the pandemic. It had the lowest coronavirus case rate per capita among towns surveyed in the area, but Darien now holds that position.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 9.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 8.5 in Darien, 9.7 in La Grange Park, 10.6 in Clarendon Hills, 11.2 in Elmhurst, 12.4 in DuPage County, 14.6 in Hinsdale, 15 in Burr Ridge, 17.1 in suburban Cook County and 19.3 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 181,943, up 6 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,517 state residents.
