Woman Escaped Armed Ex-Boyfriend by Hiding in Moving Truck

Three movers helped the woman Thursday morning by putting her into their truck and then taking her to a nearby apartment.

CHICAGO, IL — Convential wisdom says strangers in an alley are to be avoided. But conventional wisdom isn't always right.

A woman has three strangers to thank for helping her escape an ex-boyfriend who walked into the Near West Side dental office she works at Thursday morning, armed with a rifle.

Three movers from Wisdom Movers hid the woman in their truck while her ex looked for her at the Skyline Smiles dental office in the 1000 block of West Madison Street, according to DNAinfo. The 37-year-old men eventually used his rifle to shoot and kill himself outside the office.

The movers — Cody Grant, Josh Lara and Mike Zaininger — were in a nearby alley working on a moving job when the woman ran toward them, coming from the dental office, the report stated. She shouted at them for a phone and screamed that someone was shooting, the report added.

Quickly, the three men hid her in the back of their truck and then took her to an apartment that was close, the report stated. After they left that location, the woman's ex-boyfriend went looking for her in that same alley, according to the report.

When it comes to explaining their timely, potentially lifesaving actions, Lara, one of the movers, says it was simply a natural reaction to help this stranger in trouble.

"It was just our instinct to try and protect and help her," he told DNAinfo.
