(Aurora, IL) January 5, 2017—In February 2016, seven local organizations--Boy Scout Troop 45, Glenbard West Choir, Glenbard West Theatre, First United Methodist Church Youth Group and members of First Church, Englewood Rust UMC and Surrounding Community and The Salvation Army—had an idea to serve their community by holding an event that would attract many. That idea came to fruition in the fall of 2016 with the First Annual Community Rummage Sale at the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn.

One hundred and four volunteers from the seven participating organizations made the sale a success as they oversaw the sorting and displaying of items for the sale.

The sale garnered almost $5,400 and a portion of the proceeds were distributed to Glenbard West Choir and Theatre and then redistributed to the Children’s Resource Center and a family whose relative is battling pediatric cancer.

Volunteer Jason Tews explained that the event provided an opportunity for the youth to experience the joy of serving as well as to encourage team building for local organizations, increase parent involvement and raise awareness and money for their favorite organization.

“This event was a win for so many people through the experience of the joy of serving, the community participation of giving a second life to items in our homes and the knowledge that these efforts helped create a better life for so many others through both household items and financial contributions,” he says. “This is what community is all about.”
