19th-Century Wheaton Mansion Rescued; Now Someone Has To Move It

A local couple's request to move the House of Seven Gables was approved Monday. Now, they just have to move the 10,000 square foot home.

WHEATON, IL — After months of preservationists and residents biting their nails as they awaited the fate of Wheaton's House of Seven Gables, the historic mansion in Loretto Convent has gotten its "Hail Mary pass." The Wheaton City Council unanimously approved a permit Monday that will allow the mansion to be moved to the southern line of the property.

Residents Bob and Katy Goldsborough came forward last month to save the mansion from being demolished. The couple plans to move into House of Seven Gables once the house itself has been moved. How and when it will be moved is a question that has yet to be answered.

The Goldsboroughs have been working on a deal with movers, but that deal was not finalized as of Monday, according to Daily Herald. The couple's original intent was to use the mansion as a public event venue, but the park planning commission denied that request due to logistical and financial concerns. After a request to move the mansion to their nearby neighborhood was vocally opposed by neighbors, the Goldsboroughs stuck with their efforts until the Wheaton mansion was approved to be kept on the Loretto Convent grounds.
