Burglar Poses As City Employee To Get Inside Wheaton Home

Police say the suspects claimed they were from the Wheaton Water Department.

WHEATON, IL — Wheaton Police are warning residents to stay vigilant after a burglar posed as a Water Department employee to get inside of a home. The ruse burglary took place on Jan. 29 at a home on Hawkins Circle, police say.

According to police, the suspect told the victim that he was there to inspect the home's faucets because of reports of contaminated water in the neighborhood. Once inside, police say the suspect kept the homeowner distract while a second suspect entered the residence and rifled through a jewelry box.

The first suspect was described as a white male standing 5'5" tall and weighing approximately 175 pounds. There was no description available for the second suspect.

In a press release, Wheaton Police reminded residents that city employees will always present an official photo ID when they come to your home. They added that the Water Department will usually call to make an appointment in advance and that they will arrive vehicles with the city seal on them.

If you aren't sure whether you're dealing with a City of Wheaton Water Department employee, police say to call Public Works at 630-260-2110, the Water Division at 630-260-2090, or City Hall at 630-260-2000. Residents can also contact Wheaton Police at 630-260-2161 and the department will send an officer to your home.
