Connecting, Educating, Empowering: A Great Day at the Senior Expo

Wheaton, IL &mdash; In moments of crisis, it is often neighbors who make the first and most lasting difference. Milton Township invites all DuPage County residents to step forward, get trained, and be ready to serve through its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. The four-week training course begins April 9th at 6 p.m. Participants must register by March 31, 2026.
Through hands-on training, participants will gain critical skills including:
<ul><li>Fire safety and suppression</li><li>Disaster medical operations</li><li>Damage Assessment</li><li>Terrorism awareness and disaster psychology</li><li>What to stock in your home for blackouts and other emergencies.&nbsp;</li><li>How to ensure attendees&rsquo; safety during community events</li></ul>
&ldquo;Prepared communities are strong communities,&rdquo; explains CERT Director Dave Sezonov, &ldquo;CERT is more than training&mdash;it&rsquo;s an opportunity to serve others, and be a steady presence in times of uncertainty. I&rsquo;ve been a resident of Milton Township for 40-years so it&rsquo;s a great feeling to be able to give back. Plus, what you learn is incredibly practical and useful.&rdquo;
The CERT program transforms everyday residents into prepared, capable responders who can act quickly and effectively in emergencies.In just four weeks, participants can become recognized first responders&mdash;equipped with the skills, confidence, and leadership needed to support their community when it matters most.&nbsp;
Upon successful completion of both on-site training and a free 12-hour University of Utah online course, graduates are certified by the State of Illinois and provided a photo I.D. recognized by all DuPage County First Responders. Each CERT member also receives a backpack filled with tools and equipment, which is yours to keep as long as you are part of Milton Township CERT.
The program is open to all residents, regardless of experience, ability, and can include teenagers aged 16+ with a parent. Become a CERT volunteer offers residents a tangible opportunity to help protect your community and give back in a meaningful way,&nbsp;
