Coronavirus Cases, Hospitalizations Surge In DuPage County

As of Wednesday, 233 people were hospitalized with coronavirus throughout DuPage County.

WHEATON, IL — Coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have surged in recent weeks, according to an update from DuPage County Health Department. As of Wednesday. 233 patients were hospitalized with coronavirus throughout the county, prompting health officials to urge vaccinations for residents who are five years old or older.

“As hospitalizations related to COVID-19 remain at a high level here in DuPage County, we are concerned about the next few weeks as COVID-19 cases continue to rise,” DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) Executive Director Karen Ayala said in a news release.

Ayala added, “We have the tools to stop the spread of these highly contagious variants. We’re encouraging everyone to use these tools including vaccinations, and booster shots, wearing a high-quality mask consistently when indoors around those you don’t live with, getting tested when you have symptoms or before you gather indoors with others, and increasing the flow of fresh air in indoor spaces to keep virus particles from accumulating inside are essential."

Since Dec. 2020, county health data showed that more than 95 percent of residents who were hospitalized with or had died from coronavirus had not been fully vaccinated against the disease. In addition to encouraging vaccinations, health officials urged residents age 16 and older to get their coronavirus booster shots.
