Crews To Break Ground On New Jefferson Early Childhood Center

Crews will break ground on Jan. 15 to begin construction on the multi-million dollar project.

WHEATON, IL --- After months of meetings, planning, brief conflict, and a referendum vote, Wheaton-Warrenville District 200 officials will join crews to break ground for the new Jefferson Early Childhood Center. The groundbreaking, set for Jan. 15 at 2:45 p.m. is open to the public, school officials said in a press release.

The $15 million project will replace the current Jefferson Early Childhood Center, which was built in 1958. The new center will offer ADA-compliant amenities and other modern features that the current building is not equipped with. It will also include more classroom and therapy space.

In November, residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of a referendum to build a new early childhood center without levying a property tax. The referendum question was placed on the November ballot following a lawsuit filed by a resident.

The suit was prompted when the school district initially moved ahead to fund construction of the new Jefferson Early Childhood Center with lease certificates before getting the go-ahead from voters.

Those who attend the groundbreaking event, which District 200 officials have billed as "memorable," should plan to park at DuPage County Fairgrounds, where a shuttle will be ready to take you to the construction site.
