DuPage Co. Deputy on Paid Leave After Fatal Shooting of Black Teen
The deputy, whose name has not yet been released, shot and killed Trevon Johnson during a domestic call near Villa Park, authorities said.

A DuPage County deputy is on paid administrative leave after he fatally shot and killed a 17-year-old boy while responding to a domestic call near Villa Park.
The deputy, who has not yet been identified, was placed on leave “per department policy,” according to a statement Wednesday morning by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy is accused of shooting Trevon Johnson, of York Township in unincorporated Villa Park, after 911 calls were made to report a domestic situation occurring at 17W747 Standish Lane in unincorporated Villa Park at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 1, police said. The coroner ruled Tuesday that the preliminary cause of death for Johnson was multiple gunshot wounds and the preliminary manner of death was homicide.

Authorities said the deputy, who is white, thought Johnson, who was black, had a knife when he shot him, the Daily Herald reports.
One of the attorneys representing Johnson’s family, Larry R. Rogers Jr., claims the teen was not in an altercation with the deputy or with anyone else at the time of the shooting, according to the Daily Herald. He said it was irresponsible of authorities to be releasing statements describing the situation as a domestic incident.

"This seems to me to be a 17-year-old young man celebrating the holidays like all of us are with his family when he's shot and killed in his home. It's inexcusable,” Rogers said.
The fatal shooting remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
