DuPage County Bans Recreational Pot In Unincorporated Areas
The board also approved a 3 percent cannabis sales tax for municipalities that opt in.
DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — The DuPage County board voted Tuesday to ban recreational cannabis sales within unincorporated areas that fall under the county's jurisdiction. The board voted 10 to 8 in favor of the measure.
Recreational cannabis will become legal for adult use throughout Illinois effective Jan. 1, 2020. Several municipalities in DuPage County have already voted to opt out of recreational cannabisbusinesses, including Wheaton, Naperville, Lisle, and Downers Grove.
During Tuesday's meeting, officials also approved a 3 percent sales tax to be levied on recreational pot sales in DuPage towns and cities that choose to opt in. '

According to a news release from DuPage County, the decision to opt out reportedly came after a majority of county officials felt that permitting cannabis businesses would have "adverse impacts on the health, safety, and welfare of residents and additional costs and burdens on law enforcement and the judiciary system."
