Crane is a 26-year veteran of the Army. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He earned his Ph.D from Stanford University and was a professor of History at the U.S. Military Academy. After he retired from the military Dr. Crane served with the Strategic Studies Institute at the U.S. Army War College where he held the General Douglas MacArthur Chair of Research and the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg Chair of Aerospace Studies. In addition, he was the lead author for the new Army and Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Manual and was invited to Iraq in 2007 by General Petraeus to evaluate the new doctrine in action. Dr. Crane will explain what counterinsurgency doctrine is, the importance of counterinsurgency doctrine, and how are troops are implementing it in practice.
