WHEATON, IL — A Wheaton family's dog died after a fire broke out in their home late July 28.

Firefighters were called to the 200 block of West Illinois Street around 10:45 p.m. for a report of a fire in a single-family home. They got to the scene to find "heavy fire" in the rear of the home and "extensive smoke throughout the house, a city update said.

It took fire crews 20 minutes to contain the flames. No residents or firefighters were injured, but a dog who lived in the home died as a result of the fire.

The home's residents were able to return to the house after the blaze. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators say it does not appear to be suspicious.
