Fire Leaves Wheaton Apartment Building Uninhabitable

The fire broke out around 4:20 p.m. Friday in an apartment building on Briarbrook Drive.

WHEATON, IL — A fire left a 30-unit apartment building on Briarbrook Drive in Wheaton uninhabitable Friday.

No one was injured and a number of pets were rescued during the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Briarbrook Drive around 4:22 p.m. and arrived at the scene to find flames on the second floor of the building. The fire had begun to extend to the third floor and attic of the building.

Residents who were home at the time were able to get out safely and "multiple pets" were saved by firefighters, an update from city officials said.

It took about 30 minutes to contain the blaze, with crews staying on the scene for about 90 minutes after to ensure the fire had been completely extinguished.

The building was deemed uninhabitable and displaced residents were assisted by building management, the Red Cross, the Wheaton Fire Department and DuPage County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been due to improper usage of a grill.
