Sprinklers Credited With Squelching Fire at Public Works Facility

The public works facility had reopened for normal business on Tuesday following the Monday morning fire.

Sprinklers inside the city of Wheaton Public Works Facility are credited with quickly bringing a blaze under control Monday morning after a pickup truck inside the facility caught fire.

Fire crews were dispatched to the public works facility at 821 W. Liberty Drive at about 7 a.m. on Monday for an automatic fire alarm, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, fire crews identified a blaze in a pickup truck inside the fleet maintenance garage. The fire was brought under control within minutes by several fire sprinklers that were properly activated, according to a news release.

The fire damage was limited to the bed of the pickup truck.

Firefighters worked on the scene for about 30 minutes evacuating smoke and extinguishing some minor smoldering material. The building area where the fire occurred was unoccupied at the time of the incident and there were no injuries, according to the press release.

Investigators from the Wheaton Fire Department conducted a fire investigation.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined but it did not appear to be suspicious in nature, according to the news release.

Damage estimates are unavailable at this time.The city of Wheaton Building Department was called to the scene.

The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was turned back over to City of Wheaton Public Works officials after the fire, and the building will be open for regular business on Tuesday.
