Happening at WHEATON DRAMA: “The Elephant Man” opens Friday January 20th; Upcoming Audition Reminder for “Outside Mullingar”

Wheaton Drama opens "The Elephant Man" by Bernard Pomerance on 1/20; Hosts auditions for "Outside Mullingar" on 1/22-23, set to open 3/24.

THE ELEPHANT MAN opening Friday, January 20th:

Wheaton Drama welcomes 2017! There’s no better way to enjoy the New Year, than with a new show! Come to the Playhouse for the opening weekend of The Elephant Man. Written by Bernard Pomerance, The Elephant Man examines the life of Joseph Merrick. The heart of this show lies in the special friendship between Merrick and Sir Frederick Treves, a physician and surgeon. “It’s the type of friendship that every one of us should be lucky enough to have just once in our lives,” said Sean Ogren, the director of The Elephant Man.
Joseph Merrick was born in 1862 as a healthy baby boy. As a young boy, he started to develop tumors and greyish lumpy skin which not only distorted his appearance but also affected his physical health and well-being. However, The Elephant Man goes beyond the physical and gives us a glimpse into the psyche of this unique and inspiring individual. Mr. Ogren reminds us that if someone like Merrick, who has been beaten down by life, “can still find hope and beauty in humanity, then surely we can, too.”

THE ELEPHANT MAN at Wheaton Drama Playhouse opens January 20th and runs through February 12th. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 3:00pm. Wheaton Drama’s Playhouse 111 is located at 111 N. Hale Street in downtown Wheaton. For more information and to purchase tickets, please contact 630 260-1820 or visit www.wheatondrama.org. About the play: Outside Mullingar is a charming and compelling tale of two families, based on playwright John Patrick Shanley’s heritage. It is a tag-team sparring match, a testament to love in all its forms, a clever comedy, and a tale of an awkward romance that is anything but inevitable. This story of adjacent family farms in central Ireland spans several years and concerns property legacies and disputes, vendettas, questions about personal identity, wars against nature, and people’s connection to the land and to one another.

Outside Mullingar is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc., New York.
