House Fire In Wheaton Caused By Smoldering Trash Outdoors

Wheaton fire crews battled a blaze in the 1500 block of Burning Trail Tuesday.

WHEATON, IL — A fire that ignited in the trash outside a Wheaton home quickly extended to residence Tuesday. At approximately 2 p.m., the Wheaton Fire Departmnet responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1500 block of Burning Trail.

Upon arrival, fire crews found that the flames had begun consuming the home and reached up into the attic. Neighboring fire departments were called in for backup and the flames were extinguished "within minutes," according to a statement from the City of Wheaton.

After an investigation, it was determined that the fire was started by smoldering debris in an outdoor trash receptacle. The City of Wheaton Building Department assessed the damage and deemed the home uninhabitable.
