Identity Thief Applies For Social Security With Resident's Info

Police say the suspect used the victim's personal information to get Social Security benefits sent to their own account.

WHEATON, IL — Police in Wheaton are investigating an incident of identity theft in which someone used a resident's information to apply for Social Security benefits. The crime targeted a resident in the 700 block of Illinois, according to police.

Police say an unknown suspect gained access to the victim's personal information and applied for the benefits. The suspect then had the funds from the Social Security checks sent to an account that did not belong to the victim, according to a police summary.
