Wheaton, IL (April 22)— Julie Fuller wants you to think creatively when it comes to the three Eco R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. “There are certainly basic daily practices we can all do to lessen our impact on the planet. But I also love seeing how humans can use their creativity and ingenuity to make the world a more sustainable and beautiful place now and for the future.”

Fuller uses her eye for design and sewing skills to transform burlap coffee sacks into eco-friendly and stylish products. In 2012, she founded Fuller&Howe—an online store selling exclusive bags, purses and home décor—all from coffee sacks that have traveled the world.

Fuller explains why burlap is her favorite fabric choice, “Burlap is made from the Jute plant. It has a low carbon footprint, is biodegradable and feeds the soil. Plus, all parts of the plant can be used, leaving little or no waste.”

The sacks originate from coffee-growing countries around the globe and make their way to Chicago-area roasters. Once they have successfully transported coffee beans, the bags are discarded and given in piles to Fuller, who welcomes them open-armed. She then searches through them for the perfect combinations of texture and design to craft her sustainable products.

Not only do each of these bags display Fuller’s original and artistic creativity, but they also expose the vibrant and raw indigenous artwork of communities around the world. Each Fuller& Howe product enunciates the tasteful pairing of globally diverse artistic talent, while also breathing a second life into those forgotten burlap coffee sacks.
