Man Dies From West Nile Virus In DuPage County

The 65-year-old man contracted West Nile Virus in early September.

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — A 65-year-old male who contracted the West Nile Virus in early September has died, according to a press release from the DuPage County Health Department. Of the 14 cases of West Nile Virus reported in DuPage County in 2018, this is the first human death.

In a statement, DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala said, "The report of a death is a sad reminder that it's still important to protect yourself, protect your family against West Nile virus."

Health department officials say that the risk of West Nile Virus in DuPage County is still a level 3, which is considered a high risk. Many people who contract West Nile Virus experience no symptoms. Others may experience headache, fever, body aches, diarrhea, joint pain, and a rash. A small percentage of victims progress to developing meningitis or encephalitis.

To protect yourself against West Nile Virus, experts recommend draining any standing water, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and wearing bug spray with DEET from dusk to dawn.
