WHEATON, IL — A South Elgin man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the armed robbery of a Wheaton College student in 2016. Abeet Ramos, 21, is the second defendant to be sentenced in this case. In January, Jeremy Jones, 26, was sentenced to 24 years in connection with the armed robbery.

According to police, Ramos and Jones, along with another defendant who later died, drove up to a Wheaton College student who was walking in dowtown Glen Ellyn on the morning of August 26, 2016. The men got out of their car, showing a handgun, and forced the student to get into their car.

Police say the men then used the victim's bank card at several ATMs, withdrawing a total of more than $1,500. After the robbery, they drove with the victim to Chicago and dropped him off in the city.

At the sentencing DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said, "Mr. Ramos and Mr. Jones have certainly earned the sentences imposed upon them. I cannot begin to imagine the terror that the victim must have felt as these defendants drove him at gunpoint from ATM to ATM and forced him to withdraw more than $1,500 from his bank account."

Ramos must serve 50 percent of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
