Worker Killed By Falling Metal At Carol Stream Business: Authorities

A crane broke and dropped a large metal spool on the man, police said.

CAROL STREAM, IL — A worker was killed Tuesday when a crane broke and dropped a large metal spool on the man at a business in Carol Stream, according to authorities.

Emergency personnel responded around noon Tuesday to steel manufacturer S&S International in the 400 block of St. Paul Boulevard, authorities said.

"Upon arrival, first responders learned that a 55-year-old male employee had been attempting to load a large metal spool onto a flatbed truck using an overhead crane," according to a news release from the Carol Stream Police Department. "During the operation, the crane gave way, causing the spool to fall from an elevated height and strike the employee."

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Carol Stream Fire Protection District.

"Preliminary findings indicate that this incident does not appear to be criminal in nature," the police department said in the news release, adding that detectives were conducting a death investigation.

An Occupational Safety and Health Administration spokesperson confirmed Tuesday that the federal agency was also investigating the incident.
