Recreational Cannabis Gets Green Light In Unincorporated DuPage County

On Tuesday, the DuPage County Board approved zoning regulations to allow for recreational dispensaries in unincorporated parts of the county

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — Recreational cannabis sales recently got the green light in unincorporated DuPage County, after board members voted Tuesday to approve amending a county zoning ordinance to include regulations for dispensaries.

The change comes after staff was directed in late June to prepare an Adult-Use Cannabis Permitting Program. As a result, cannabis dispensaries must adhere to the following regulations:

  • Cannot be located in residential or downtown areas
  • Cannot be on land that is government controlled
  • Must be on major roadways
  • Must have a 25,000 square foot lot for parking
  • Must not be near schools, group homes or day cares

DuPage County initially voted 10 to 8 to ban recreational dispensaries in unincorporated areas in October 2019. The prior decision cited "adverse impacts on the health, safety, and welfare of residents and additional costs and burdens on law enforcement and the judiciary system."
