Ruse Burglary Attempt Reported In Wheaton: Cops

Police say someone came to the home claiming to be with the city's water department.

WHEATON, IL — Wheaton police are investigating a ruse burglary attempt in which a person claimed to be a representative from the city's Water Division and tried to gain access to a home. The incident took place Nov. 24 in the 100 block of East Tennyson Drive, according to a recent police report.

Police say the person came to the home's door around 3:15 p.m. and told the resident they needed to get into the home to check the water line. The resident refused to let the person in and subsequently alerted the Wheaton Police Department.

Wheaton police are reminding residents that city employees should have identification with them to confirm their credentials. If someone visits your home claiming to be a city employee and has not previously made an appointment to do so, you should ask them for identification, police advise.

Police further advise that residents call 911 if they are uncertain about someone who is attempting to gain access to their home.
