“Sensitive Images” Stolen from Central DuPage Hospital Patient’s Phone by Former Nurse: Police

Mark Luis, 33, of Elgin is charged with non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images, allegedly sent himself pics of patient.

WHEATON, IL — A former Central DuPage Hospital employee has been charged with taking a patient’s cellphone and using it to send himself “sensitive” and “personal” images and videos of the patient, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said. Mark Luis, 33, of 783 Waterside Drive in South Elgin, voluntarily turned himself in at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office today, where he is being held on $150,000 bond.

On November 12, 2016, while working as a nurse at Central DuPage Hospital Luis allegedly saw the female victim use her password to unlock her cellphone. Police said the woman was unable to use her phone for part of her hospital say, so the cell phone was left at the nurses’ station at that time. It is alleged that Luis then took the phone from the nurses’ station and used the victim’s password to gain entry to her phone. Police said that Luis then allegedly used the victim’s phone to send himself more than six videos and 60 “sensitive, personal” photographs.

When the victim returned home after her stay at Central DuPage Hospital, she allegedly synced up her iCloud to find that several images and videos had been sent to an unfamiliar number when she did not have her phone in her possession.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said of the Central DuPage Hospital incident, “The sickening behavior alleged against Mr. Luis in this case is just astounding,” Berlin said. “Going to the hospital can be a very stressful event and while there, patients should not have to worry about such a tremendous invasion of privacy, as is alleged in this case.”

Mark Luis has been charged with one count of non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images and one count of computer tampering, both Class 4 Felonies. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 8, 2017.
