State's Driver Service Facility in Downtown Wheaton to Close Due to Unpaid Rent
The express driver service facility will close for good on March 24.
WHEATON, IL - The state's express driver service facility will close next week after the state failed to make rent payments on the location at 128 W. Liberty Drive in Wheaton for several months, the Daily Herald reports.
The facility is slated to close its doors for good at 5 p.m. on March 24 " due to the landlord’s decision not to renew the lease," according to a statement posted on the Secretary of State's website.
The ongoing budget impasse is to blame and secretary of state spokesman David Druker told the Daily Herald 138 driver service facilities in the state have not received rent payments since July. A supplemental appropriation approved by lawmakers in December meant some money for rent was sent out to all locations, including the facility in Wheaton.

The Wheaton facility, which has been open since the 1990s and serves about 9,000 customers per month, will be the first in the state to close due to unpaid rent, according to the newspaper.
After it closes, the closest drivers service facilities for Wheaton and Glen Ellyn residents will be in Lombard, Naperville and Aurora.
