Here are some good tips to review to keep your family safe this summer.

The Wheaton Police Department recommends the following crime prevention and personal safety tips to help you have a safe summer:

Bike Safety Tips

  • Obey the rules of the road.
  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Wear bright-colored or reflective clothing while riding.
  • Always ride with traffic – never against it.
  • Tell your parent/guardian where you are heading.
  • Always keep bicycles locked up.

  • When leaving town on vacation, stop by the police department or visit our websitewww.wheaton.il.us/servicerequest to request a vacation house watch. We will keep an eye on your home for free.
  • Have someone pick up your mail and newspapers.
  • Leave a lamp on a timer.
  • Always lock your home, garage or office.
  • Fight the urge to let everyone on social media know that you are out of town and that your home and valuables are unattended!

General Safety

  • Do not leave valuables in your car.
  • If you must leave items in your car, put the items in the trunk.
  • When driving, always lock your doors.
  • When transporting small children, use rear door child safety locks (your owner’s manual will give you the specifics).
